Nokia C7

Nokia are obviously not doing a great job preventing those leaks as another of their handsets has been previewed well-ahead of its official announcement. This time it's the Nokia C7 and even though the preview doesn't give us all the details it gets clear that the C7 is a slightly trimmed-down Nokia N8, coming at a lower price.

Nokia C7 gets previewed

Despite his history of legal issues with Nokia, Eldar Murtazin from mobile-review.com posted a preview of the Nokia C7. The handset obviously takes the N8 base, but uses a cheaper body (plastic rather than anodized aluminum) and cuts down a few features . The major cut is the camera - 8MP and LED flash vs. the 12MP camera with xenon flash on the N8.

HDMI is also gone and the internal memory has been halved to 8GB. The rest of it is the same - 3.5" nHD AMOLED, 680MHz CPU, 256MB RAM, 1200mAh Li-Ion battery and of course Symbian^3. The Nokia C7 also supports the latest local wireless connectivity - Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0 (which hit 10Mbit/s during testing).

Nokia N9

I was relieved to see the Nokia N9 surface, with a nice-looking slide-out QWERTY and 8MP camera. It's been a long time coming for Nokia, even if it's shown running Symbian for now. These new specs sound pretty decent.

According to Techno Buffalo, who managed to persuade Negri Electronics to part with it for a few hours after showing it off on video the other day, it's got the following specs:

* NAM 3G Bands (850/1900)
* nHD Display (640 X 360)
* 4″ Capacitive multi-touch display
* Front facing camera (VGA?) with LED Flash
* Rear 8MPX camera with Dual LED Flash
* WiFi, Bluetooth
* HDMI Out

The 8MP camera on the back, forward-facing camera on the front and mini HDMI port are all visible in the first
photo. The screen looks large, with Techno Buffalo confirming it's one of the nHD screens which was seen in the 5800 XpressMusic and N97, so-called because it's 1/9th of a HD screen.

Like we said the other day, it's very doubtful that the N9 will actually launch with Symbian, considering they've ditched it for their high-end N-series range of phones. So expect to see this slide-out QWERTY coming at your way with MeeGo OS, the platform that's come from the joint venture between Nokia and Intel. [Techo Buffalo]

Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type

Today Nokia announced their first handset to pack a touchscreen and a regular alphanumeric keypad simultaneously. Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type is also the first S40 touch-driven device to get a global release.

The unusual handset leaked last week and most of the specs that were made available back then got confirmed today. Despite its low standing in the food chain, the Nokia X3-02 packs excellent connectivity with WLAN (including the new N standard), 3G with HSPA, Bluetooth and microUSB all on board. The music fans will also appreciate the 3.5mm audio jack

The Nokia X3-02 touchscreen measures 2.4" in diagonal and sports QVGA resolution. This is one of the smallest touchscreens on the market so we really hope that Nokia did a good job of optimizing the interface.

The final noteworthy feature of the 9.6mm slim device is its 5 megapixel fixed-focus camera that is also capable of recording video.

Here's a promo video, which shows glimpses of the UI in action:

Nokia X3-02 should hit the shelves before the end of next month in White Silver, Dark Metal, Petrol Blue, Pink and Lilac color versions. Its estimated retail price is 125 euro before taxes or subsides.

Apple iPhone 4

The iPhone 4 also packs some hidden treats on the inside, making this the best model so far. Is it worth the upgrade from the iPhone 3G? Did you just recently buy an iPhone 3GS and you aren't sure if you want to upgrade already? Or maybe you have never owned an iPhone yet and are thinking the iPhone 4 might be the time to switch. Keep reading to find out, and see if the iPhone 4 can live up to your expectations.

Note: Pay attention to all the pictures in this review, as they were taken strictly with the new iPhone 4 camera.

DESIGN & BUILD

Apple gave the iPhone 4 a design overhaul from the previous 3GS version. The new model is only 0.37 inches thin, compared to its predecessor which is 0.48 inches.

There is no plastic on the exterior of the iPhone 4, and the standard silver bezel that was the trim to all previous iPhones is now gone. The front and back now glass. Supposedly, the glass used is "30 times harder than plastic", and is "comparable to the strength of sapphire crystal", according to Apple's Jonathon Ives.

Between the two pieces of glass is an aluminum strip that wraps around the entire phone. The cool part about this is that the metal trim serves as an antenna for 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth, which helps signal significantly.

Display
When you first look at the display on the iPhone 4, it is simply gorgeous. This is without a doubt one of the best improvements on the new model. The new screen resolution is 960 x 640, up from 480 x 320 on all previous iPhones and iPod touches.

Since the screen didn't get any bigger, there is a lot more pixels per inch now -- 326 to be exact. Currently, there is no other smartphone on the market with a screen of this resolution. To the human eye, it is almost like a digital print. You really can't see any individual pixels anymore, and everything is more crisp.

It will only be a matter of time before all the current applications are updated to support the resolution. The developers have to do little work to make this change.

Now if Apple increased the screen size of the iPhone, that would have been a completely different story, but I can't see that happening anytime soon.

Buttons and Controls
On the front of the Apple iPhone 4 you have the standard "Home" button, along with the proximity and ambient light sensor, and the biggest change, a VGA front-facing camera.

Around the outside of the device you can find the standby button, the new microSIM slot (which has some improved benefits over the standard SIM card), a speaker, a microphone, another microphone (that helps remove background noise), a headphone jack, a silent toggle, and two separate volume buttons.

NEW Apple MacBook Black

The Apple MacBook "Core Duo" 2.0 13-Inch (Black) features a 2.0 GHz Intel "Core Duo" processor (T2500), with two independent processor "cores" on a single silicon chip, a 2 MB shared "on chip" level 2 cache, a 667 MHz frontside bus, 512 MB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300) installed in pairs (two 256 MB modules), an 80.0 GB Serial ATA (5400 RPM) hard drive with "Sudden Motion Sensor" technology, a 4X slot-loading double layer read (single layer write) DVD/CD-RW "SuperDrive", an Intel GMA 950 integrated "graphics processor with 64 MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory", and a 13.3" widescreen TFT active-matrix "glossy" display (1280x800 native resolution).

Like the MacBook Pro "Core Duo" 15-Inch models, the MacBooks have AirPort Extreme (802.11g), Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Gigabit Ethernet, a FireWire "400" port, two USB 2.0 ports, and optical digital audio in/out, along with video out capabilities (mini-DVI) that for the first time on a "consumer" Apple notebook officially support a non-mirrored external display. They also have the same "scrolling TrackPad", a built-in iSight video camera, an Apple Remote for use with Apple Front Row software, and the clever "MagSafe" power connector. Unique to the MacBook include a redesigned "flush against the bed" keyboard that does not touch the screen, a "no moving parts" magnetic latch that "catches without a catch", and a case design that makes upgrading the RAM and hard drive easy.

Acer Ferrari One

Acer's partnership with Ferrari to build laptops containing Ferrari design elements goes back at least to 2004. The Ferrari One, however, is a totally different machine from the large and expensive Ferrari laptops of the past. It weighs just 3.3 pounds with its standard six-cell battery in place, and it measures roughly an inch thick; yet it contains an Athlon X2 dual-core low-voltage CPU and 4GB of RAM. Is it a large and relatively high-powered netbook, or a small and somewhat low-powered ultraportable? From here, it appears to straddle the line effectively and appealingly.

The system's styling is great for fans of Ferrari Red. The laptop is quite thin and light, with a smooth glossy finish and nice lines. Only the large cooling vent on the left edge breaks up the sleek finish. Despite the svelte frame, Acer crams plenty of ports into the sides: three USB ports, gigabit ethernet, a VGA output, mic in and headphone out, a multicard reader slot, and even a slot for ATI's optional external graphics.

One of the best things about the Ferrari One is its low cost: The base price of $599 includes a 1366 by 768 backlit LED screen, which delivers nice contrast and color; a 250GB hard drive; 4GB of RAM; and Windows 7 Home Premium.
Sounds Good, Feels Good

The Ferrari One's sound quality is excellent for such a small system, thanks to third-generation Dolby Home Theater audio enhancements, including Dolby Headphone and Dolby Digital Live. The laptop's lack of an optical drive cuts into the sound system's utility, of course, but still TV shows on Hulu had surprising audio punch.

Other strong features include a large, comfortable keyboard; and a smooth and accurate multitouch-gesture-capable touchpad. Though the touchpad button bar is slightly stiff, it makes a satisfying "click" sound when activated and isn't susceptible to accidental pressing at the wrong time. The main disappointments are the Ctrl and Function keys, which are so narrow and so close together that it's easy to hit one instead of the other by mistake. I also wish that Acer had provided an HDMI port for video output rather than the less useful VGA port.
Reasonable Performance for Such a Small System

Speaking of Hulu and other Web video sources, the integrated ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics chip does a fairly good job with video acceleration. It struggled a little on higher-bitrate 1080p video, but typical Web flash and standard-def video--and even 720p H.264 video--looked clean and stutter-free. This is a big step up from the Intel integrated graphics that most netbooks use. The Radeon HD 3200 also handles 3D graphics processing far more capably than the Intel alternative does, though it may be a bit too weak to support the latest games.

This Ferrari One posted a score a 61 on WorldBench 6, which is low in comparison to what a top-notch ultraportable notebook (like the Sony VAIO VGN-Z598U) earns, but excellent in comparison to what even the best netbook (the Toshiba Mini NB205-N310, say) can manage. In view of the laptop's size and price, its overall performance is by no means a dealbreaker. Its battery life measured just under 5 hours--an average figure for a system of its size. (A typical 10-inch netbook lasts several hours longer.)

If you'd like to make the Ferrari One your one and only PC, you'll probably find that it's a slightly small and underpowered to handle the job satisfactorily. If you think of it as an on-the-go companion PC, though, it's most impressive. The laptop's slick design, solid features, and adequate performance for its size and weight make it a great buy.

Nokia N900

The Nokia N900 is a mobile computer made by Nokia with smartphone functions. It supersedes the N810. Its default operating system, Maemo 5, is an Open Source Linux distribution originally developed for the N900. It is the first Nokia device based upon the TI OMAP3 microprocessor with the ARM Cortex-A8 core. Unlike the three Nokia internet tablets preceding it, the Nokia N900 is the first Maemo device to include phone functionality (quad-band GSM and 3G UMTS).

The N900 functions as a mobile internet device, and includes e-mail, web browsing and access to online services, a 5 mega pixel digital camera for still or video photography, a portable media player for music and video, calculator, games console and text processor, SMS, as well as mobile telephony using either a mobile network or VoIP via WiFi.[4] Maemo provides an X-terminal interface for interacting with the core operating system.

It was launched at Nokia World on September 2, 2009 and was released on November 11, 2009 in the United States and 9 European countries.

The N900 was launched alongside Maemo 5, giving the device an overall more touch-friendly interface than its predecessors and a customizable home screen which mixes application icons with shortcuts and widgets. Maemo 5 supports Adobe Flash Player 9.4, and includes many applications designed specifically for the mobile platform such as a new touch-friendly media player.

The Nokia N900 will be the last mobile communication device running the Maemo operating system, which will be replaced by MeeGo. The N900 will continue to be supported with updates when necessary.

Nokia N8

The Nokia N8 today officially emerges into the daylight, stepping out of the shadows equipped with a host of smartphone talents. The first device to be powered by the brand new Symbian^3 platform, the Nokia N8 will launch with a new breed of camera that promises to capture photos and video to rival dedicated point and shoot cameras. Read on to explore Nokia N8’s full list of talents.

The biggest feature on the Nokia N8 is its 12-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon flash. It features a substantially larger sensor than any ever used in any other Nokia device – even bigger than many found in dedicated cameras. Recently, we caught up with Nokia’s resident camera guru, Damian Dinning, to get the full lowdown on what went into fine-tuning the N8’s camera and video capture skills – you’ll be able to read the full fact-packed story right here on Conversations this week, so stay tuned.

Check out the first sample images from the Nokia N8

The Nokia N8 also introduces the ability to record high definition videos and edit them with a smart built-in editing suite on the device. Playback quality is just as important, and the 3.5-inch HD capacitive touchscreen is the ideal window for assessing your flicks and footage. There’s also a HDMI connector allowing you to hook the smartphone to your HD TV and share your media with friends and family in superb quality. We wanted to find out more about the benefits of HDMI in the Nokia N8 so we spoke to Paul Wheeler, a software program manager at Nokia, to get the full story – again, be sure to keep an eye out for our full story this later this week.

Check out the first HD video sample from the Nokia N8

The Nokia N8 also doubles as a portable entertainment centre. Watch HD quality video with Dolby Digital Plus surround sound and hook into a dedicated Web TV application for access to news and entertainment on the move.

It’s not just its 12-megapixel camera and HD video skills with HDMI support that set the Nokia N8 apart from the crowd. Packing more memory than most, the Nokia N8 has 16GB of built-in storage and is expandable up to 48GB with a micro SD card.

Joining the social messaging fold with the likes of the latest Eseries and Cseries devices, the N8 enters the fray with live Twitter and Facebook updates direct to your homescreen. Comment, read and send messages, update your status and share your location and photos with one touch.

Embracing location based services, the N8 is location-savvy and comes with free global Ovi Maps walk and drive navigation with support in more than 70 countries worldwide.

Powering the Nokia N8 is the all-new Symbian^3 platform. This latest incarnation introduces major new advances including multi-touch and support for gestures such as pinch-to-zoom. Onboard there’s also three customisable homescreens that can be loaded with applications and widgets and flicked through by a swish of the finger. There’s also improved 2D and 3D graphics for a faster and more responsive UI, greater memory management and a visual task manager.

Of course, the Nokia N8 comes with access to the full range of Ovi services and it’s Nokia’s first smartphone to be integrated with Qt. Got and idea for an app? Qt is a software development environment that makes it a cinch to build apps and deploy across the Symbian and other software platforms.

Not to be outdone by its innards the Nokia N8 is carved from a single piece of anodised aluminium and looks glorious decked in one of five eye-catching colours (we’ll shortly be bringing you an entire article dedicated to the colours). It will cost €370 (before the usual local taxes and subsidies) when it starts shipping in the third quarter of 2010.

Over the coming week we’ll bring you heaps more insight and info surrounding the new Nokia N8, including designer interviews, exclusive videos, and much more. Stay tuned for all our unmissable coverage throughout the week. In the meantime, share your instant reactions and let us know what you want to know about the Nokia N8 by joining the conversation below.

Alienware M17x

The most powerful Intel® mobile processor available, ATi CrossFireX™ dual-GPU graphics and Alienware’s dramatic industrial design deliverthe ultimate Hi-def mobile gaming and entertainment experience. Strike fear in your enemies and taste sweet victory.

Speed is Survival

Any hesitation means almost-certain death. Power through the most hardcore games and intense applications with the latest Intel® Core™ i7 and Core™ i5 processors featuring Intel® Turbo Boost Technology for dynamic, on-the-fly overclocking.

You’re only as good as your GPU

If you want your games cranked up to max settings with ultrafast frame rates, the Alienware M17x now offers up to a full one teraflop of sheer graphics power with ATI CrossFireX™. Experience incredible scalability, performance and compatibility while obtaining desktop-quality imagery.

Final Words and Conclusion

When we looked at the pre-production M17x back in June we were impressed by the quality of the system. Since then Alienware have added an extra level of sheen to the product and as far as desktop replacements go, this is a fantastic machine.

Alienware’s decision to opt for a clean design throughout the chassis has resulted in a very appealing chassis which looks both professional and cutting edge. When the lid is opened we are presented with a stunning screen and after powering on the system small aspects such as the re-enforced keyboard and touch panel functionality add a feel of real quality to the build.

Thanks to some high specification components such as the QX9300 CPU, 4GB of DDR3-1333 and dual GTX 280’s the performance of the M17x we tested was exceptional, additionally it is possible to increase this further with options such as dual 256GB SSDs in RAID 0 ... equally so if your budget is limited the components can be configured to a lower specification. The option to include a single GTX 260 along with dual core processor is a fine example of how this machine can provide a great experience for those on a lower budget as well as it does for those who do not want to compromise with performance when on the move.

We were also impressed by the thermal performance of the M17x. When using the 9400 GPU it was cool enough to sit on our lap for general use, something which cannot be said of many previous Alienware models. When moving to performance mode with the GTX 280's the vent and exhaust layout is very capable. All air being passed out of the back of the machine makes a huge difference to the temperatures of the internal components and the area surrounding the front and sides of the chassis as well as the base.

Battery life was also very good for the class of system. There is no way the system will ever compete on this front with the new Macbook Pro 17inch however two hours of high definition content and three of general use should be more than enough for most users. Especially as this is a machine which is unlikely to move far from its main location.

Alienware even have the little things pretty much perfected. The free mouse pad and cap add a nice consumer friendly touch and the Respawn function works as well as any restore software we have used. Start it off and return in around 30minutes to find the system back in its original state.

Special mention also has to go to the PSU which is provided with the M17x; it runs very cool and is compact compared to previous models which is a great achievement.

Overall it is hard to find fault with the M17x but there is one. The inclusion of face recognition software is, from a geek point of view, very cool. It rarely works though. Regardless of how long we used the software for and how many times it attempted to store/recognise our faces it rarely allowed us to login/unlock the system automatically.

Nokia X6 16GB

The all-black Nokia X6 XpressMusic comes with a sizable 16GB of on-board storage and boasts enough space for 5,500 music tracks.

The Nokia X6 16GB being a series 60 device, allows for the full edition of Ovi Maps with voice guided sat nav to be downloaded free on the X6 with navigable maps for over 70 countries worldwide and drive or walk navigation, free map updates, Lonely Planet and Michelin guides all a click-away.

Outside that substantial 16GB storage sits a lush 3.2-inch widescreen capacitive touchscreen. Running the latest version of Symbian the Nokia X6 16GB boasts up to 18 days standby time, 11.5 hours talktime, 4.5 hours of video playback and a whopping 35 hours of music playback!

Images are taken care of with a 5-megapixel camera sporting Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash. Shooting videos is a joy, not just because of the camera but the TV-out function enables you to watch your masterpieces on the big screen, too. And of course, you can edit your videos right there on the device.

Gamers will be happy with the pre-loaded games including Spore by EA, Asphalt4 and DJ Mix Tour by Gameloft; all come as standard with the new Nokia X6 XpressMusic handset.

Introduction

Acer may be new to the smartphone game but they’re learning fast. On paper, the Acer Stream has all the right ingredients to tackle the HTC Desire and the Nexus One. With much stronger emphasis on multimedia than the titular Google phone, the Acer Stream has a few aces up its sleeve and isn’t afraid to play them.

Acer dabbled in customizing Android with the Liquid, but their first attempts were far from impressive. Packing the latest version of Acer’s custom Android UI, the Stream is a completely different story.

We won’t spoil the surprise – the changes run pretty deep and we can’t summarize them in one paragraph anyway. But don’t be too quick to skip straight to the User interface chapter of this review. The hardware has a few cool things in store as well.

Subtle small-font labels leave no doubt about the multimedia prowess of the Acer Stream. The 5MP camera can capture 720p videos and you’ll also spot the Dolby Mobile logo, which promises great sonic experience. But if you’re not careful you might miss the HDMI label right next to the microUSB port. That’s right, the Acer Stream has a microHDMI port to deliver HD video to compatible external displays.

Here goes the list of pros and cons, for the most impatient readers.

Key features

3G with HSDPA 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA 2Mbps
Android OS v2.1 with Acer Touch 3D UI v4.0
3.7" capacitive touchscreen of WVGA resolution; multi-touch support
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8250 1GHz CPU, 512 MB RAM
