Nokia N9

I was relieved to see the Nokia N9 surface, with a nice-looking slide-out QWERTY and 8MP camera. It's been a long time coming for Nokia, even if it's shown running Symbian for now. These new specs sound pretty decent.

According to Techno Buffalo, who managed to persuade Negri Electronics to part with it for a few hours after showing it off on video the other day, it's got the following specs:

* NAM 3G Bands (850/1900)
* nHD Display (640 X 360)
* 4″ Capacitive multi-touch display
* Front facing camera (VGA?) with LED Flash
* Rear 8MPX camera with Dual LED Flash
* WiFi, Bluetooth
* HDMI Out

The 8MP camera on the back, forward-facing camera on the front and mini HDMI port are all visible in the first photo. The screen looks large, with Techno Buffalo confirming it's one of the nHD screens which was seen in the 5800 XpressMusic and N97, so-called because it's 1/9th of a HD screen.

Like we said the other day, it's very doubtful that the N9 will actually launch with Symbian, considering they've ditched it for their high-end N-series range of phones. So expect to see this slide-out QWERTY coming at your way with MeeGo OS, the platform that's come from the joint venture between Nokia and Intel. [Techo Buffalo]

Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type

Today Nokia announced their first handset to pack a touchscreen and a regular alphanumeric keypad simultaneously. Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type is also the first S40 touch-driven device to get a global release.

The unusual handset leaked last week and most of the specs that were made available back then got confirmed today. Despite its low standing in the food chain, the Nokia X3-02 packs excellent connectivity with WLAN (including the new N standard), 3G with HSPA, Bluetooth and microUSB all on board. The music fans will also appreciate the 3.5mm audio jack


The Nokia X3-02 touchscreen measures 2.4" in diagonal and sports QVGA resolution. This is one of the smallest touchscreens on the market so we really hope that Nokia did a good job of optimizing the interface.

The final noteworthy feature of the 9.6mm slim device is its 5 megapixel fixed-focus camera that is also capable of recording video.

Nokia X3-02 should hit the shelves before the end of next month in White Silver, Dark Metal, Petrol Blue, Pink and Lilac color versions. Its estimated retail price is 125 euro before taxes or subsides.

DESIGN & BUILD

Apple gave the iPhone 4 a design overhaul from the previous 3GS version. The new model is only 0.37 inches thin, compared to its predecessor which is 0.48 inches.

There is no plastic on the exterior of the iPhone 4, and the standard silver bezel that was the trim to all previous iPhones is now gone. The front and back now glass. Supposedly, the glass used is "30 times harder than plastic", and is "comparable to the strength of sapphire crystal", according to Apple's Jonathon Ives.

Between the two pieces of glass is an aluminum strip that wraps around the entire phone. The cool part about this is that the metal trim serves as an antenna for 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth, which helps signal significantly.

Display
When you first look at the display on the iPhone 4, it is simply gorgeous. This is without a doubt one of the best improvements on the new model. The new screen resolution is 960 x 640, up from 480 x 320 on all previous iPhones and iPod touches.

Since the screen didn't get any bigger, there is a lot more pixels per inch now -- 326 to be exact. Currently, there is no other smartphone on the market with a screen of this resolution. To the human eye, it is almost like a digital print. You really can't see any individual pixels anymore, and everything is more crisp.

It will only be a matter of time before all the current applications are updated to support the resolution. The developers have to do little work to make this change.

Now if Apple increased the screen size of the iPhone, that would have been a completely different story, but I can't see that happening anytime soon.

Buttons and Controls
On the front of the Apple iPhone 4 you have the standard "Home" button, along with the proximity and ambient light sensor, and the biggest change, a VGA front-facing camera.

Around the outside of the device you can find the standby button, the new microSIM slot (which has some improved benefits over the standard SIM card), a speaker, a microphone, another microphone (that helps remove background noise), a headphone jack, a silent toggle, and two separate volume buttons.
